Project Overview
AI is becoming more prominent in research, and the way researchers are interacting with AI technologies differs across disciplines. To address this change in the AI-landscape and provide more support for students across faculties, the University of Victoria Libraries started to create discipline-specific educational modules. As their GenAI and Digital Literacy Intern, I was tasked with designing, implementing, and reviewing module content on e-learning development platforms.

My Responsibilities
I collaborated with the university's law liaison librarians on this project. The librarians were the ones who created the core module content (since these modules were tailored for the Faculty of Law), while I was in charge of interpreting that content into a module format using Articulate 360.
Because of my background in AI, I also helped shape course content by providing knowledge, definitions, and explanations of AI in an approachable manner for students.
Finally, I was also in charge of reviewing all tutorial modules for grammar, accessibility, and readability.
Challenges I Faced
As this was my first project creating educational course content for students, adapting the content to fit accessibility and Universal Design for Learning (UDL) standards was a learning curve. I learnt a significant amount about different accessibility supports and their importance, such as headings, alt text, and providing enough context for text-to-speech understanding.
Altering the reading level to be understandable for students across years and levels of AI knowledge took more time than anticipated, as staying away from both AI and legal jargon proved difficult at times.
Learning a new software was also a challenge, as there were often disparities between what we initially envisioned, versus what was actually possible through the software. However, through discussion and adaptation, me and the liaison librarians felt we were able to successfully implement the content in an engaging way.
